National data indicates that one-third of college students are food and/or housing insecure, and recent ISU data shows that 31% of ISU students are food insecure.
SHOP (Students Helping Our Peers), the food pantry on Iowa State's campus, celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2021. Over the last decade, SHOP has provided food and personal care items to thousands of Iowa State University students, faculty and staff in need. During the fall 2021 semester, an average of 320 students visited SHOP every month and SHOP gave out an average of 4,000 pounds of food per month. SHOP is advised and supported by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Student Health and Wellness unit.
The SHOP’s expanded location allows for more space and storage for food, including frozen and fresh items with the addition of refrigerators and freezers, as well as personal care items. As SHOP continues to serve more people and offer additional items, new infrastructure needs, updated inventory and ordering technology, and money to purchase food through various partnerships has been essential.
